Omega 3, an essential fatty acid, has been shown to reduce inflammation and help prevent the risk factor associated with health conditions like heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.  Because omega-3 fatty acids are not naturally produced in the body, they must be acquired by the foods that we eat.  Clinical studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids (containing ALA which is converted by the body into EPA and DHA) may be helpful in treating numerous health issues.

Preventing Disease

One of the best ways to help prevent  chronic disease is to eat a low-fat diet and to replace foods rich in saturated and trans-fat with those that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids.  According to the FDA in 2004, consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.  People who eat an ALA-rich diet are less likely to suffer a fatal heart attack, and helps protect against stroke caused by plaque buildup and blood clots.

Additional Benefits

People who consume a healthy amount of omega-3 in their diets, tend also to have higher “good” cholesterol levels (high density lipoprotein) and decreased triglycerides (fatty material that circulates in the blood).  Several studies suggest that diets rich in omega-3 also can lead to significant reductions in blood pressure.
